Hertford Private Therapy Room

Assessment and Consultation

Psychological assessments and extended  consultations, can be offered as either a stand-alone service, or they may form the start of a longer piece of therapeutic work together.

I provide an initial 15-minute telephone consultation where we can briefly explore what has prompted you to seek therapy and for you to ask any questions you might have about my approach. At the end of this call, we may agree to book a 50-minute appointment, or we might identify that another therapy approach is better suited to your circumstances and therapy needs.

If we both agree that it would be helpful to schedule an appointment, we will use these initial assessment sessions to explore the matters important to you, your hopes for therapy and to develop a shared psychological understanding (“formulation”) of your struggles and what’s keeping them going.

At the end of the assessment (typically 2-3 sessions) we will agree the next step and whether it would be helpful to continue working together. You are not obliged to complete the assessment or embark on further sessions after this initial period. As I have a duty of care, if I think that you would be better helped by seeing a therapist with a different specialism, I will always discuss this with you at any stage of our work together.

Individual Therapy

I work with individual adults (age 18 and over), offering short, or long-term therapy depending on your circumstances and what you may be looking for.

Sessions are weekly, and tailored to take into consideration our shared psychological understanding of your difficulties, your unique hopes, goals and personal circumstances.

I draw on a range of evidence-based therapies, especially those that are underpinned by a relational and attachment framework, such as Psychodynamic and Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT).

I will not claim to be an expert in you, and nor do I offer a quick-fix, superficial solution to your individual struggles. However, my approach is to get to know you as a whole person, and to provide a thoughtful and reflective therapy space, where together we can gently explore why circumstances may feel difficult or stuck. Sessions will involve making links between past and present experiences, untangling thoughts, feelings or events and working towards a life that feels more authentic and fulfilling for you.
